Dark Souls: 6 Heart-Breaking Moments

3. Siegmeyer Of Catarina

Stir Crzy

Siegmeyer€™s presence in Lordran can be explained in a few different ways. His circumstance may have been similar to that of Reah€™s; cast out of his homeland because of his curse. Or perhaps, it something as simple as him wanting to find adventure, for an adventurer is what he is. But the presence of Siegmeyer€™s daughter, Sieglinde, in Lordran reveals that there may be more to this story than meets the eye. She is risking life and limb to find her father, so that she can deliver his wife€™s final, dying words.

On our own travels through Lordran we save Siegmeyer from jeopardy multiple times. This, of course, was done with good intentions, but it might be possible that in doing so, we were gradually slighting his honour as a knight. This may have been a contributor to his eventual hollowing. Eventually, Sieglinde finds her father, and tells him what she has to say. With the knowledge of his wife€™s death, Siegmeyer€™s road to hollowing shortens significantly; he is on the verge. Spurred on by his misfortune, our friend Siegmeyer bids us farewell at Firelink Shrine and goes on one final adventure, which leads him down to Ash Lake.

I should note that this character€™s story can end in multiple ways, but I believe there is only one true ending.

Upon arrival in Ash Lake, Siegmeyer fully hollows, and when his daughter finds him in this state, she is forced to kill him once and for all. She loved him whole-heartedly right till the end. We then arrive helplessly at Ash Lake to see one of the most heart-breaking images of the game: Sieglinde standing morbidly over the body of her fallen father, a brave, noble knight, and a friendly soul who was one of our only friends.
