Dark Souls: 6 Heart-Breaking Moments

4. Reah the Accursed

Reach

This is a rather long and complicated story with numerous different outcomes. There is tragedy at every turn, as Reah of Thorolund is an innocent victim of banishment, curse, and betrayal.

Reah is known to be a daughter of the House of Thorolund - the most prestigious house connected to the Way of White. The Way of White is a church which seems to be the main governing body of the Dark Souls mythos. Despite her high-birth, Reah is treated as an outcast when the Undead Curse befalls her.

When a member of the church is branded with the Darksign, they are sent in pilgrimage to Lordran, where they must attempt to seek the right of kindling. This leads to two possible outcomes: either the missioned person dies, ridding the church of a cursed member, or the person succeeds in finding the sacred rite, meaning the church is better equipped to serve their leader, Lord Gwyn. Both of these outcomes are beneficial to the Way of White.

So off they send the maiden Reah to Lordran. I won€™t re-tell the story step by step; it is rather intricate and much of it depends on individual interpretation and opinion. I will, however, list the three possible outcomes. The first is that she is left to rot in the unremitting dark of the Tomb of Giants, where she has been abandoned and betrayed, and her two friends and companions, Vince and Nico, have gone hollow, leaving her all alone and helpless.

However, you can save her from this sombre end, in which case she will escape the darkness and can be found in the Undead Church, praying. At this point you may have learned that Petrus of Thorolund, the cleric who can be found in Firelink Shrine, betrayed her. Whatever his motive may be, he proceeds to finish the job he started by assassinating Reah where she prays. This is the second, tragic outcome of Reah€™s story.

But this too can be avoided. With the knowledge of Petrus€™ betrayal, you may take it upon yourself to kill him for his wretched behavior. This will save Reah from being assassinated.

For €œfreeing€ her two escorts Vince and Nico, and simultaneously saving her from the Tomb of Giants, Reah offers to teach you all that she knows. If you then purchase all the miracles and items she has to offer, she considers her debt to you repaid, and thus has nothing left to live for. She has been banished from her home and family, cast away like a piece of trash. She has lost two dear and loyal companions, and been betrayed for reasons which were of no fault of her own. When an Undead has nothing left to live for, they begin to hollow.

For the third outcome you can find Reah in a cell in the Duke€™s Archives (she has been kidnapped by a channellor, to be a new subject for Seath€™s experiments). The royal, innocent maiden of Thorolund has fully hollowed, and despite the fact you are her last remaining friend, she attacks you on site. You do her a kindness by slaying her.
