Dark Souls: 6 Heart-Breaking Moments

2. The Fair Lady

Fair Lady

I made mention earlier about the Witch of Izalith attempting to reduplicate the first flame using her Lord Soul. She did this so that the age of fire could last forever, instead of it eventually burning away into darkness. A nice idea, but it failed, and led to truly horrendous consequences.

It was this action that birthed chaos fire into the world €“ the Bed of Chaos being, well, the bed of it. Izalith and its inhabitants were massacred; no less so where the Witch€™s daughters (and son). Two such daughters were Quelaag and Quelaan, The Fair Lady. The chaos fire corrupted them, giving them their half-spider forms. They managed to flee Izalith and make residence at the base of Blighttown.

The reason you find The Fair Lady in such a sickly state is that she took sympathy on the sufferings of the denizens of Blighttown; she sucked out their blight-puss, poisoning herself. Quelaag, her sister, takes care of The Fair Lady, feeding her humanity to keep her alive. That is why she attacks those who stray into her lair €“ it is solely in the interest of her dying sister. And then the Chosen Undead kills Quelaag, exterminating the Fair Lady€™s main supplier of survival. If you equip the Old Witch€™s Ring, you can understand what The Fair Lady is saying. She is blind, and you are in possession of her sister€™s soul €“ she believes that you are Quelaag. I don€™t know about you, but my soul trembled at this point, as I realised what I had done, and just how much of a tragedy this character was. And that voice...

Now, in the words of the many Orange Sign Soapstones seen throughout Lordran, €˜Imminent tears ahead€€™
