Does Spider-Man PS4's Launch Trailer Tease Playable Miles Morales?

Arachnid Redemption?

Spider-Man PS4 Peter Parker Miles Morales
Insomniac

Hold onto your webs, True Believers. Insomniac's Spider-Man game releases in just under a month, and to mark the occasion, the studio have unveiled a brand new (and likely final) trailer!

Clocking in at just over a minute long, the gameplay launch trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man doesn't actually disclose anything new. The fact that Insomniac are keeping the story under wraps, however, is likely to come as a relief for fans who'd feared that, in the run up to release, key details from the game's plot would inevitably be spoiled.

There's more to the trailer than meets the eye though. Miles Morales, the character introduced by Brian Bendis and Sara Pichelli in 2011, who himself would go on to become Spider-Man, features prominently - and it could be because he's gearing up for a bigger part than fans had initially predicted.

The theme of Insomniac's Spidey title has long been about Peter wanting to live his life and potentially relax into his commitments as Spider-Man. The emergence of Mister Negative and the Sinister Six throws a wrench into the works, and he's called back into action, but it's already been established that Peter - now eight years into his career as the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man - could perhaps look to ease away from his responsibilities as a vigilante.

This trailer goes one step further by actively foreshadowing the demise of Parker's Spider-Man. When Pete swings in to rescue Miles from... something, he asks him to "leave it to the pros", to which Miles replies "but what if there aren't any around?" Peter then laughs it off, before we're given a montage of him being beaten, threatened and more, leading us to believe that the two sequences have been intentionally placed together.

More interesting as well, perhaps, is that the trailer ends with a brand new shot of Morales admiring Spidey from afar. Given previous footage has shown off some aggressive looking, potentially radioactive Spiders before too, could it be the case that Insomniac will depict Miles' transformation into a Spider-Man of his own, potentially with Peter bowing out of the spotlight temporarily?

It wouldn't be out of the question, and with Miles likely to play a key role in a sequel as well, having him develop his powers sooner, rather than later, would make a whole lot of sense.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
