Doom: Ranking All The Games From Worst To Best
5. Doom 3
I've spoken about this game enough already in regards to the successes of its predecessors, so I'm sure it will come as no surprise when I give it all the praise I am about to.
Doom 3 is a wonderfully original entry into a franchise that - at the time - had been following a certain path for its past four games.
Breaking that mould, the third game in the main series offered up the very first taste of true 3D graphics (as opposed to the 'fake' 3D environments previously designed by Carmack and Romero). This was combined with the aforementioned horror gameplay style that had not yet been explored, mixing a slow moving atmospheric focus with a new lighting system and creepy sound design.
Overall, the experience of Doom 3 reads a lot less like a Doom game than any other title within the series, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. On the opposite end of the spectrum to Doom 64, Doom 3 sacrifices story and plot for a more mechanically experimental game that introduced plenty of new concepts for its demons and weapons.
And just as a note on the BFG Edition; though it did largely tidy up the graphics and further improve the sound and lighting, the fact that it is basically the same game with the Resurrection of Evil expansion stitched on would have made it a somewhat problematic entry to categorise on this list.
