Last year, in a serious attempt to up their first-party studio drought, Microsoft went on a ridiculous buying spree. They not only obtained obvious choices they had former relationships with (e.g.Playground Games, Undead Labs), they also went out of their way to own much-championed indie houses (e.g. Obsidian, Ninja Theory).
So, now they finally stand toe-to-toe with Sony in quantity of first-party devs, you’d think they would rest their laurels – but no, they actually saved the best for last; now, they also own the highly beloved Double Fine Productions.
This was a gobsmacking move that they casually announced during their E3 conference. With the ever-likeable studio founder Tim Schafer, coming out on stage and cracking some trademark cracks about the merge as well.
This means the long-awaited Psychonauts 2 will now be a Microsoft published title – but don’t worry fans (or Kickstarter backers) - it is still coming to the PS4.
