Every Lucasarts Adventure Game: Ranked Worst To Best

8. Full Throttle

Tim Schafer's asphalt-scarring Heavy Metal adventure Full Throttle burns its rubber hard, but regrettably fast. Ben Throttle's tale of motorcycle redemption takes place in arguably one of Lucasarts' finest settings, part Mad Max, part Sons of Anarchy - albeit all tongue-in-cheek - but just as you're getting into gear, things run out of gas.

What feels like an opening act turns out to be more or less the full game, and before you know it, you've reached the end of the road. What is there is excellent - the opening area of Melonweed drips with oily atmosphere like a bust jerrycan, the writing is as dry as it is understated, and the voice work hitherto unparalleled - in particular memorable performances by Mark Hamill and the late Roy Conrad. The only real misstep are the highly questionable arcade-action sequences, anathema to all adventure game fans.

Ultimately, Full Throttle is a superb starter adventure, let down by its limited mileage.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
