Knocking Ocarina Of Time off the throne of the best 3D Zelda game, it's mind boggling to think just how much Breath Of The Wild revolutionised the Zelda series, while still maintaining the franchise's trademark flair.

Taking inspiration from the very first game in the franchise, Breath Of The Wild knocked the series' traditional structure out of the park, ditching linearity entirely to revert to the open world gameplay of the 1986 Legend Of Zelda.

In many ways, Breath Of The Wild feels like a culmination of the franchise, taking the best aspects of each Zelda game and remixing them into the series' defining statement. Of course, there's the open world aspect of The Legend Of Zelda, with the game focusing on discovery, but the RPG elements of The Adventure Of Link make a (refined) return, and Skyward Sword's item collection mechanic is expanded. The game even takes a cue from Majora's Mask in stressing the importance of side quests, and the gameworld is as fleshed out as that of Twilight Princess. Despite maintaining aspects of series' previous titles, Breath Of The Wild's sheer size makes it hard to imagine a return to the traditional formula in the future, with anything less seeming like a step back.

Breath of the Wild is truly a massive game, with players still discovering new ways to play three years down the line. Providing countless hours of discovery and entertainment, Breath of the Wild is not only the best Zelda game to date, but arguably the best video game of all time. Nintendo will find it hard to top this.
