Every Mainline Console Zelda Game Ranked
3. Ocarina Of Time
Considered by many to be the best video game of all time, Ocarina of Time took massive strides in 3D gaming, and is chockablock with memorable moments that have been since cemented into video game history. Seeing Hyrule castle town deserted after Link's famous time travel sequence remains chilling to this day, while the opening shot of the Hero of Hyrule riding through the fields on the back of his trusty steed is arguably the most famous opening sequence of any video game on any platform.
Measuring Ocarina Of Time's achievements is a near impossible task, with the influence of its revolutionary Z-Targeting mechanic still being felt in games today.
Best played on the 3DS re-release, however, Ocarina Of Time can seem somewhat stale to new players today, through no fault of its own. In a way, Ocarina's success came back to bite it; more recent Zelda games, which have used Ocarina as a template, have made the Nintendo 64 title feel rote, watered-down and predictable by comparison. Hyrule Field is bare and empty, especially compared with the expansive and exciting open world of Breath of the Wild; the series' story and battle mechanics have since been refined, not the least by the franchise's GameCube titles.
In fact, bar the addition of new races such as the Zora and the Gorons, Ocarina of Time introduced relatively little to the series' mythos when compared to its SNES counterpart. Much has been made of the similarities between Ocarina and A Link to the Past, some fans even suggesting Ocarina was little more than a 3D remake of the previous title.
Still, Ocarina Of Time's influence cannot be overstated, and the game remains a joy to play to this day, its tight and focused gameplay still giving it an edge over Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker.
