18 years later, one of the most passionate fanbases in gaming history is finally getting their final instalment. Literally, there's an entire generation of gamers who weren't even on this planet when the last instalment dropped.

Granted it had to be crowd-funded into existence, but after the budget stretched to an unprecedented 7.1 million dollars, hopefully this last hurrah will be the best one yet. Because make no mistake, Shenmue is one of the most influential and innovative titles in gaming history, its legacy is encouraging open-worlds to be more interactive; "controllable" in everything from phone numbers on walls you can dial, to minigames breaking up more standard melee action.

Sega's own Yakuza series has done an immaculate job carrying forward the freeform quirky spirit that this once pioneered, and all eyes are on YS Net to deliver a sequel almost two decades in the making.
