Every Pokémon Generation Ranked From Worst To Best

1. Generation 2 (Pokémon Gold & Silver)

In addition to being the best selling Pokémon games of all time, Pokémon Gold and Silver also introduced the best generation. Even the Johto region had its weak points - the terrible Dunsparce, laughable Shuckle and intriguing but ultimately useless Unown - but overall, had a level of quality unseen in even the first generation.

Gen 2 introduced some awesome evolutions of gen 1 Pokémon, with Steelix, Scizor and especially Blissey improving on their already impressive original forms. Umbreon and Espeon are two of the most popular Eeveelutions, and despite their relative redundancy, the baby Pokémon introduced in these games were unarguably adorable.

The original Pokémon of gen 2 are universally awesome. Mareep and Marill are adorable, while Miltank is as badass as it is cute. Heracross is one of the strongest bug types in the series, and Houndoom perfectly marries a killer design with intimidating stats.

Though Chikorita ranks below other grass-type starters, you are spoilt for choice when you begin Pokémon Gold and Silver. Cyndaquil is (barring Charmander) arguably the best fire starter, and Totodile and its evolutions are among the strongest water-types. The legendary dog trio of Entei, Suicune and Raikou are worthy additions to the canon, and Ho-oh and Lugia are some of the most magnificent creatures the series has to offer.

Pokémon Gold and Silver are probably the best Pokémon games to date, and have the best Pokémon to boot.
