Barcelona don't do things the orthodox way, do they? With Sergi Roberto, a midfielder, at right-back and Javier Mascherano, who made his name as a midfield destroyer, as Gerard Pique's partner in defence, they have certainly gone about their tactics in a unique way. But when they are as talented as successful as they have been, they've probably earned the right.

Despite his lack of height, Mascherano has excelled at the back for Barcelona. His ball retention is second to none and his passing over five to ten yards is exemplary. His last-ditch tackling is impeccably timed, even though he is rarely caught out of position enough to have make them.

With 51 appearances in all competitions for the club, it was another fine season for the Argentine international and he will be looking forward to his seventh season with relish.
