FIFA 17 Demo: 10 Hands-On Impressions You Need To Know
6. New Corner Kick Mechanic Has Potential
Set pieces in FIFA have been ripe for change recently, especially because 16 didn't really do much to stop that 'pot luck' feeling. Some players are good at free kicks, whereas others regularly balloon the ball into the sky no matter how long they take to set a chance up.
Corners were also once a fairly useless mechanic, and it was often much easier to simply call a teammate short and try to weave your way into the opposition box. Sometimes they'd work when floated into the box, but the ball seemed to magnetise to keepers, making success feel entirely random and player input less consequential.
A new mechanic takes away that randomness, and things feel a lot more pin point as a result. Gamers can now pick out a specific spot on the field (marked with a reticule), and control the elevation of corners. Better yet, you can also switch control to individual players in the box, calling for the kick to be aimed straight at them.
This opens up more tactical thought during corners, rather than just lumping it in and hoping for the best.
