FIFA 17 Demo: 10 Hands-On Impressions You Need To Know
3. New Penalty System Will Take Some Getting Used To
There was nothing especially wrong with the way penalties were handled in previous FIFA games. Unlike corners and free kicks, there's much more of a lucky vibe to the penalty kick in real football. Nerves come into play, as do subtle nuances like how quickly a player approaches the ball during his run up.
EA have taken all of these factors into account for FIFA 17, and - simply put - some people just won't like what they've done. You can now totally change how a player runs up for his kick, and pushing forward on the left stick (whilst simultaenously aiming direction) coincides with then pressing the shoot button to complete the movement.
There's a lot to take in at first, it feels extremely different to the previous 'pick a direction and put some power on it' way of doing things. As aforementioned, some longtime players will turn their nose up at the new penalty system, and it's hard to argue that it's one that will require some patience.
Hilariously, the AI seemed to have some issues with it too. In the three shootouts that occurred during play through, the CPU only scored twice.
