You only get one chance to make a first impression and, given the emotion riding on this project, it's probably the most critical one in gaming history. Thankfully it's with immense personal and professional delight that I can say the Final Fantasy VII Remake will absolutely stun you from it's very first moments and then never, ever, let you go.

Visually, it's an absolute triumph. Even by today's standards it feels like a powerful step forward and will likely be where this particular generation of consoles peaks. The reimagining of Midgar is breathtaking, the character models (despite the *ahem* problem I've already mentioned) are gloriously realised and the attention to detail that's gone into it deserves endless acclaim.

When Sony released the Playstation 3, they decided to show off the console's power by recreating the intro to Final Fantasy VII as something of a technical demonstration. A weird flex, and one that had fans demanding the company immediately begin a revival project on "modern" hardware.

They didn't, and instead waited nearly a decade to release this instead. Mere seconds into it, you can see why.
