While we'd all like to play entertaining, classy football, there are those instances where a swanky high pressing game or rapid counter-attack just won't cut it.

If taking charge of a lower league side, sometimes less is more when it comes to your tactics. Rather than complicating things or trying to get players to do things that are simply beyond their talent level, a traditional 4-4-2 of yesteryear is a solid and sturdy when to go.

Here, it's Central Defenders who are prepared to head bricks away, Wingers who love to hug the touchline and pull the ball into the box, two hardworking players in the middle of the park, and a couple of fellas up front who nicely compliment each other and bag their fair share of goals.

This is meat and potato football, this is direct, this is no-nonsense, and this is often the sort of tactic you'd be best advised to implement if you opt to take over a team in the lower reaches of their respective football pyramids.
