One of the classic go-to formations of recent Football Manager releases, a wide 4-2-3-1 setup may well be the tactic of choice for a good majority of gamers.

This is your classic high energy, high press football, designed for you to run rings around your opponent and capitalise on any slight mistake they may make. It's counter-attacking, it's quick passing, and it's incredibly direct and in your face.

When it comes to key areas for this formation, you must have a pair of Central Defenders who are good on the ball, your Advanced Forward will have to have excellent movement, your Wingers will need to be comfortable coming inside as Inverted Wingers, and the most vital element here is your players' fitness.

If opting to go with this 4-2-3-1 Wide setup, you need players whose fitness levels are strong. Whether that's due to natural stamina and fitness, or whether that's down to having good fitness coaches in place, you'll need to make sure you have a group of players who are able to run around all day for you.

With this tactic, it's also important to make use of all of the substitutes available to you, as otherwise you'll run the risk of burnout amongst some of your regular starters.
