Halo: The Master Chief Collection - 10 Incredible Moments You Need To Revisit
8. First Arrival
Game: Halo: Combat Evolved Level: Halo It might not look great now but back in 2001, Halo was a beautiful game. The mystery and excitement of space was captured well and the distant planets looked freaking awesome. One moment in the game really wowed us way back then though. Crash-landing on the Halo ring and stepping out into a lush grassy plain was a really unexpected moment. After all, the Halo rings are giant pieces of metal; seeing any colour other than grey is massively surprising. Bungie do a really good job at building a level around exploring this area too - the mission gives you a Warthog and tasks you with seeking out the Marine-carrying lifepods. It even mixes up the landscape to create an even more interesting sci-fi world; one part of the mission sees you heading underground through intricately made passageways. Plus, this level introduces some classic design choices which forever changed the way we'd view worlds in Halo. In the distance, you can see the ring of Halo stretch away, highlighting the fact that you're currently stood on a giant ring. This unique background design has always been a key marker in determining whether you're exploring a planet or one of the hostile rings. Most games have to introduce you to a fantastical world at some point; very few have done it as well as Bungie here.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
