Horizon Zero Dawn: 16 Crucial Tips & Tricks The Game Doesn't Tell You
7. Additional Heavy & Drop Melee Attacks
Following the tutorial, once you're beset by mobs of enemies, you might end up trying to aim and fire in quick succession - only to bust out a slow wind-up attack instead. This happens because the 'heavy attack' button is firstly, not covered in the tutorial, and second, doubles as your fire button, once you're holding L2.
With that in mind, you can hit the right trigger at any time to bust out a much more damaging (and far slower) heavy attack whenever you're not aiming at anything - perfect for striking a downed enemy before following it up with a Critical Hit.
Atop this, you can pull off a drop attack with R1 if you hit it in mid-air. Try luring creatures around outcrops of rock, loop around and come crashing down on them for knockdown bonuses - just be aware that they'll fight back immediately, so get ready on that dodge (Circle) button.
