Horizon Zero Dawn: 16 Crucial Tips & Tricks The Game Doesn't Tell You
12. The Rattler Has A Subtle, Very Important Use
If you don't want to know any of the unlockable weapons outside the bow and arrow, skip this entry.
That said, the Rattler is a super primitive machine gun that fires Metal Shards - the basic currency in the game. Now, the reason this stands out, is every other major weapon requires the 'Wire' component to reload/craft more ammunition of.
This is especially true of the more advanced bows, which only fire upgraded arrowheads, forever tasking you with looting the fallen corpses or wreckage of machines mid-fight, and praying you get the right item. Needless to say, it left me thwacking away at a particularly large boss with nothing more than my spear, which is a good way to get dead.
Enter the Rattler - which only requires metal shards to reload. Keep one of these bad boys in your inventory at all times, and swap it back into your active L1 weapon wheel when all else has been depleted.
Trust me, you'll be glad for the Plan B.
