Horizon Zero Dawn: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

Hands-down the best PlayStation exclusive of the generation.

Horizon Zero Dawn
Sony

It's been a long time coming, but thanks to Guerrilla Games keeping their heads down - save for press conference trailers or behind-the-scenes looks - Horizon Zero Dawn has emerged, fully-formed, as not only one of this generation's most impressive titles, but one of the most tantalising reasons to invest in Sony hardware thus far, alongside being one of the finest PlayStation exclusives of all time.

Yes, really.

You can tell that thanks to Guerrilla being holed up developing Killzone for the last 13 years, it's resulted in a veritable explosion of creation, colour, passion and confidence. That's the biggest takeaway from Horizon overall: It's a project compiled by a perfectly-sized, diverse team, encompassing a number of gameplay mechanics suited for blockbuster entertainment, routed through a mythology and world that's as detailed as an Elder Scrolls or The Witcher.

Every single part - well, almost every single part - glimmers like the system-selling showstopper Horizon was born to be, and whilst there are some genuinely minuscule blemishes to address, the vast majority of Zero Dawn is a resoundingly positive career-best for Guerrilla Games.
