Just as Nintendo Directs became a thing, the rise of streaming services across the internet has seen publishers embrace platforms and social media for new announcements.

Each major conference has provided an online stream for public viewing for many years, be it through Twitch, Youtube or their own websites and others have also replaced the live conference stage for a pre-recorded format.

It's a method utilised by companies of all sizes, but unlike Nintendo, a lot of publishers have prepared these broadcasts to match up with the convention, instead of directly attending. Google and Bungie utilised this approach last year for Stadia and Destiny 2 reveals, respectively.

This has mostly benefitted smaller companies and E3 2019 featured separate broadcasts from UploadVR, Devolver Digital and Limited Run Games.

This opened up the field, providing a platform alongside big publishers and giving them greater precedence, with Devolver receiving wide acclaim for their unique, comedic approach. It brought a creative aspect to press conferences that simply can't be achieved on a convention stage, one that can only continue evolving.
