Marvel's Avengers Game: 10 Gameplay Details You Totally Missed

2. Taskmaster Is The Main Villain (Or Is He?)

Though he was only briefly glimpsed in the trailer, Square Enix have since explained that Taskmaster will be the game's main villain. It appears he's the one who staged the attack in San Francisco that drove The Avengers apart, and is admittedly an inspired pick, rarely playing a major role in video games and not showing up in the MCU so far.

Consequently, there's scope for the developers to put their own spin on the super-villain, and create an original story that won't be constantly compared to either the Avengers movies or any previous video games. That said, there's absolutely no chance he's going to be the main antagonist for the entire story.

The whole thing stinks of the bait-and-switch Insomniac pulled with Mr. Negative. He was the only main villain shown in the pre-release trailers, with the devs bigging up how they were wanting to shed light on an overlooked character. And, in their defence, they did just that, but Mr Negative's status as main villain was mainly used to hide the actual antagonist of the piece, Doc Ock.

Taskmaster, then, will probably end up playing a similar role in Avengers, carrying out the whims of a much bigger, more well-known threat.
