Mass Effect: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Shepard
3. Liara Is Responsible For Bringing Shepard's Body To Cerberus
Remember the start of Mass Effect 2? Of course you do - it was probably one of the most shocking moments in gaming ever.
After being attacked in the Normandy, Commander Shepard ends up dead. Like, actually dead. After these events, somehow Cerberus gets their hands on the remains of Shepard, and through sciency-science things in the Lazarus project, Shepard is brought back to life.
However, there's a bit of a gap in the story here where it's not quite elaborated on how Cerberus actually gets their hands on Shepard's body in the first place.
In Mass Effect: Redemption, a four-issue comic series, these gaps are filled. Redemption reveals that most of the crew of the Normandy from ME1 don't know about Shepard's death; they are simply thought to be missing.
Liara T'Soni, everyone's favourite Asari companion, launches an investigation and finds out about Shepard's death. She then meets Miranda Lawson, who introduces Liara to the Illusive Man, Cerberus's leader. Here, it is revealed that Cerberus wants Shepard's body as it 'represents humanity' and also reveals that the mysterious collector race are searching for Shepard's body too.
Devastated at the loss of her friend, Liara enters a race against time to get the body first, before the mysterious Shadow Broker, working for the Collectors, gets it first. Eventually, she retrieves the body, and although she disagrees with Cerberus's methods, realises they are the only possible option for reviving Shepard.
