Mass Effect: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Shepard

4. The Voice Of The Catalyst Is Both Male And Female Shepard

Bioware

Ok, so you were probably too busy being annoyed at Bioware dropping the ball with the ending of Mass Effect 3 to notice, but there's actually a really cool Easter egg that Bioware incorporated into it.

If you cast your mind back to the ending, you'll meet a mysterious artificial intelligence inside the Citadel. Known as the Catalyst, this rogue AI is responsible for the Reapers in general; it was first constructed by the ancient civilisation the Leviathans, who always noticed that organic life is overthrown by their synthetic creations. To stop this, they charged the catalyst with wiping out all life before it could happen, hence the Reapers.

If you listen closely to when the Catalyst speaks, you'll hear some very familiar tones. It's actually voiced by both Jennifer Hale (Female Shepard) and Mark Meer (Male Shepard) and you can hear both of their voices echoing through the Catalyst's speech as it talks.

This is likely because the AI wants to appeal to Shepard's nature; it also takes the form of a young boy killed during the Reaper invasion of Earth, to further tug on Shep's heartstrings.
