Lamping al-Jilani came across as hilarious just out of the sheer unexpected nature of the interaction - you literally saw the command prompt on the screen to "Shut up", and the next thing you're watching a badly-animated swing deck the poor journalist in one hit. Naturally it became a running joke across the trilogy, with each time she shows up providing a reference to the last. Overall it is a bit questionable that punching a woman square in the face is a 'Mass Effect thing', but the point is that you're reacting to the invasive nature of the mainstream press as you become an intergalactic celebrity, rather than anything offensive on the part of the developers.
