Nintendo NX: 9 Things It Needs To Avoid Another Wii U Failure

7. Big-Hitting Launch Titles

At what point did a console's launch lineup go from being a way of showing off all the incredible things that the console was capable, to something you'd shrug at, before saying that it "takes time for developers to really take advantage of a console's capabilities"? The N64's launch included Super Mario 64, Pilotwings 64 and Wave Race 64, while the Wii U had a load of games mostly regurgitated from other consoles, with an uncharacteristically unimaginative outing for Mario in Super Mario Bros U. The only launch game that really tried to show what the hardware was about was ZombiU, and even that wasn't the jaw-dropper that those N64 launch games were. Sure, the Xbox 360 and PS4 didn't need incredible launch titles to sell extremely well, but Nintendo is seriously playing catch-up to Microsoft and Sony now, so that first impression matters more than ever. It should kick things off with a truly next-gen game, backed up by a couple of exclusives or a new IP to really signal to the gaming world that the NX is a console with a strong sense of identity behind it.
