Nintendo Switch Online: 10 More SNES Games It Desperately Needs
5. Earthbound
Earthbound is an absolute cult classic of a game whose aura has only been enhanced by its limited availability. For years it was never ported or re-released. Original SNES cartridges changed hands for silly money. It was one of the more glaring omissions on Nintendo Wii’s virtual console.
Even when it finally saw an e-shop release it was only on the “new” version of 3DS and the little loved Wii U, limiting the number of people who could actually get their hands on it.
Which is a shame because Earthbound is a clever, quirky take on turn based RPGs. It’s not just a game but a coming of age story about loneliness and the uncertainty of growing up. The game was written by award winning author Shigesato Itoi and the dialogue shines.
Unlike the fantasy realms usually associated with JRPGs, Earthbound is set in a satirical version of America but this “normal” setting allows for plenty of weirdness.
Most recently Earthbound was included on the SNES Mini suggesting that Nintendo haven’t forgotten about it. It would be great to see this game find a wider audience on Switch.
