4. Donky Kong Country
Visually stunning for the time, the groundbreaking 3D graphics of Nintendo’s original Star Fox now look kinda, well, basic. While still an impressive achievement and a real showcase for what the SNES could do, the polygon heavy space battles look worse than basically any mobile phone game you can bring to mind.
By contrast, Rare’s Donkey Kong Country used gorgeous 3D sprites to make a 2D platformer stand out and the game still makes for pretty alluring eye candy today.
Not that it would count for much if those visuals weren’t married to a compelling gameplay. DKC is a brutally tough platformer that allows you to switch between Donkey and Diddy Kong with distinct play styles for each.
Donkey Kong May have found fame as Mario’s barrel lobbing antagonist in the original Donkey Kong title but DKC made the character synonymous with brutally tough side scrolling platformers. The game’s legacy lives on with Retro Studio’s Donkey Kong titles like Tropical Freeze.
