4. Special Challenges
Perhaps in response to the end of new hero drops in Overwatch's main game, the fairly recent development of Special Challenges have renewed interest in Overwatch, given how much each challenge reveals about Overwatch's story, seemingly gearing up for Overwatch 2's eventual release.
The first special challenge was D.Va's Nano Cola Challenge, which set up the rest of the challenges after it. The ones that followed after, such as Ana's Bastet Challenge, Baptiste's Reunion, Mercy's Recall, Symmetra's Restoration, among others, engaged with the lore through accompanying illustrated short stories tackling each of their experiences before or during Winston's Overwatch recall.
A similarly lore-centred Challenge came with the release of Tracer's comic, London Calling, which takes place during and after the assassination of Mondatta, as seen in the "Alive" cinematic.
Other events, such as Sigma's Maestro event and Bastion's Brick Challenge, accompanied other updates in Overwatch, such as a release centred on map soundtracks and their collaboration with LEGO.
Another aspect of this event that engaged with the fandom was that of Twitch drops, providing special sprays for people who watched Overwatch games on Twitch.
