Overwatch: Ranking Every Cinematic Short (So Far)

6. Infiltration

An action-packed, exciting, and intriguing piece with a fantastic ensemble cast, this short is reminiscent of the best-written superhero cartoons of the 90s and early 2000s. It builds the world of Overwatch effectively, both in terms of politics, and in terms of how Overwatch's greatest enemy, Talon, operates.

Sombra's personality and motivations shine through in this short without compromising the equally interesting motivation of Katya Volskaya, Russia's leader in their ongoing Omnic Crisis, nor the team dynamic of Reaper and Widow alongside their resident hacker.

The action flows cleverly well, with visual gags that don't undercut the real threat Talon presents. People are killed quite ruthlessly onscreen in this short, something that Blizzard certainly hasn't shied away from, and political machinations and intrigue strengthen the depth and adult nuance of a game that's as brightly coloured as a children's cartoon.

Sombra's betrayal gives the audience the kind of exciting twist that has them coming back for more, even if it's later revealed in the Masquerade comic that Reaper knew the truth the whole time.

This short is what everyone's looking to when they ask, "When will Blizzard make this a TV series?" Talon alone could make for an amazing show.
