Pokemon: Every Main Game Ranked Worst To Best

1. Gen Two - Pokemon Gold & Silver

Somehow, Game Freak has still not managed to surpass its 1999 masterpiece, and at this point it is unlikely it ever will.

Transforming Pokemon from a straightforward fusion of a rock-paper-scissors combat system with relatively linear adventuring into an in-depth and increasingly complex RPG, Gold & Silver revolutionised the franchise, cementing a number of features still familiar to players today.

Breeding, day and night cycles and separate Special Attack and Defense stats are all staples of the franchise today, each advancing the franchise's competitive play in their own way.

While the story is much the same as that of Red & Blue, Gold & Silver packs the added bonus of taking players back to the Kanto region after defeating Johto's gyms and Elite Four -- essentially containing two entire games in one.

Other entries in the franchise have tried and failed to create postgame content quite as compelling as Gold & Silver's, and until a Pokemon game packs so much in and introduces as many revolutionary concepts as Gold & Silver, Generation 2 will face absolutely no threats to its place on the throne.

As with Red & Blue, though, these games are best enjoyed through their DS re-releases, 2009's absolutely stunning HeartGold & SoulSilver.
