Kanto & Johto were Japan, Kalos France and Alola Hawaii. Game Freak has trotted the globe for ideas on where to base each of the series' geographical locations populated by man and 'Mon alike, and if the rumours are to be believed, it looks as if we'll once again be returning to Europe for Pokémon's Switch debut, the first time since 2013's X & Y.

Spain and Italy are the two frontrunners and for what it's worth, our money's on the latter. Rome and Venice, both architecturally unlike any other city, would be a perfect fit. The Roman Colosseum could easily be repurposed as an ancient arena used for Pokémon battles of yore and Venice's iconic Rialto bridge/Basilica would make for fantastic Gym settings - assuming they make a comeback after their absence in Sun & Moon.

In fact, it all so effortlessly fits into the template that it's surprising Game Freak hasn't already utilized the shoe-shaped country as inspiration for a Pokémon title.

Calling it now: the Mafia will be used as the basis for Pokémon Switch's antagonistic force only, you know, watered down a tad to fit within the age rating.
