PS4: 10 Features Sony Must Implement In The Next Firmware Update

4. Backwards Compatibility/A Trade-Up Service

You can do anything with firmware and patches these days, and for a while the talk of backwards compatibility died down as Sony pushed their Playstation Now service; essentially being 'Netflix for games', giving you access to a centralised hub even though the games themselves are only streamed and not stored. That seems to have been put on the backburner for the most part thanks to a combination of atrocious pricing and lots of inevitable lag that comes with streaming controller inputs across several states at once, so why does backwards compatibility still remain a feature resigned to certain versions of past Playstation hardware? At the least they should patch in the ability to recognise your discs and prompt for a discounted price of a digital release (if one is available), or outside of this do what Rockstar did with GTA and allow for trade-ins of the previous generation version to allow for a discount on the newer remastered edition in-store. Right now it feels like the newest consoles exist on their own little island away from the rest of gaming history for a number of reasons, and the staunch opposition of rewarding your loyalty to both the medium and brand of Playstation in favour of selling you full-priced products all over again is questionable at best.
