PS4 Slim: 8 Ultimate Wishlist Features It Must Have
5. Forced Demos For Every Game
Note: Above GIF taken from Giant Bomb's interview with Microsoft's Phil Spencer and Kudo Tsunoda. Right now (July 2015) the gaming industry's going through a strange state of flux. We've seen the mid-tier of development drop out completely (Midways, Pandemic, THQ, Bizarre Creations etc.) leaving only small-budget indie titles sitting right next to the most elaborately designed triple-A releases. In addition, the scale of everything has ramped up considerably, with games costing far more than they ever have as publishers take less risks to ensure they make their money back. It all conflates around release day, when crunched deadlines and marketing campaigns push a product out the door that just isn't ready for consumers - something that's become indicative of this generation, when it should only really be associated with the medium's beginnings some 30 years ago. The solution to some degree is letting consumers know what they're getting into. If a title is going to require multiple patches after launch then so be it, but provide gamers with a slice of what you're going to be offering in the end anyway. We used to have this ideology for the majority of titles on the last generation of consoles, or when gaming magazines ruled all and demo discs were sacrosanct, yet now the idea of a demo for a major release is almost non-existent. Can you remember the last time you visited the Demo section of the PS Store and came away with something that made you excited for a new game, as oppose to being forced to put place your faith in an overhyped "Pre-order now!" marketing campaign? Of course not.
