Rage 2: 10 Reasons It's A Crushing Disappointment
8. The Lack Of Any Motivation
A first-person shooter or any action game's tutorial/opening chunk exists to do two things: Establish the control scheme, and give you a reason to use it.
Rage 2 mostly hits the former (even if it relies on "Just shoot stuff, especially the red barrels), but the latter?
Oof.
Your "motivation" boils down to "You found a suit of armour which belonged to a Ranger. You saw this Ranger be killed, and now you are a Ranger." That's it.
What are Rangers? Why do we care? In a world where the villain is a giant mech with a human head, why is the opposing positive side a suit of armour that gives you an "Overdrive" where bullets do more damage? Even the villain's faction, The Authority, sound horrifically lame - especially when played with a straight face.
I've already mentioned how Rage 2 expects you to bring character motivation with you, but that will get stretched to breaking point as NPC mission-givers, bounty boards and story characters come and go without anything landing.
