Rage 2: 10 Reasons It's A Crushing Disappointment

4. Outdated Mission Design

So you've survived the opening slog, you've maybe nabbed a few weapon and skill upgrades, and you're ready to tackle the main missions.

What does Rage 2 have on offer?

*Awkward cough*

Well... you can clear out some underground tunnels of monsters? Maybe shoot some objects on the walls to trigger an opening? There are a handful of bullet sponge bosses where you have to dash out the way, so that's something, but none of it feels anywhere near as fresh and vibrant as the gorgeous visuals.

Rage 2 has a sublime core combat system, but it's never put to good use. You CAN unlock the ability to leap around like a gazelle, raining down fire from your... three-ish weapons, but there's nothing on the level of Titanfall 2's final gauntlet with the auto-lock pistol, or DOOM's acquisition of the BFG.

There's even a throwaway line near the end where your hero addresses the rote nature of everything by exhaustedly quipping "I'm gonna go there, kill some guys... bring back the item", but that's what you then do.

You can't address the stuff we're all sick of and then make us do it anyway. Without any sense of subversion outside the dialogue, it's just baffling.
