Ranking 2015’s Summer Video Games From Worst To Best

7. Until Dawn

Did anybody really expect Until Dawn to be this good? Initially tapped as a PlayStation Move game on PS3, it tended to get bandied about on forums as "that horror thing with the chick from Heroes", but thankfully the version that released in 2015 is about as best a rework as could expected, and then some. Still including said Heroes chick (the forever 18-looking Hayden Panettiere), now it featured far more impressive graphics (with some eerily-perfect facial capture) as you alternate between pulling off Heavy Rain-style quick-time event cutscenes and Silent Hill/old-school Resi-style 'what's-that-in-the-background?!' explorative sections. The reason it's so damn fun to play is threefold. One, stereotypical teen-horror is always going to have a base appeal in watching your favourites make it out alive or get slaughtered. Two, Prison Break's Peter Stormare guides you through a multi-layered story with plenty of twists and turns, talking to your character before segueing back and forth between the murderous happenings in the cabin - and three, it's turned into an unintentional pass n' play cultural phenomenon. Although the game is strictly single player, the general buzz has let Until Dawn become a couch multiplayer gem, seeing entire groups of friends treating the story as a night at the movies, picking their favourite characters and controlling them accordingly. Thanks to the branching narrative and fairly equal screentime between every major player, Until Dawn has essentially turned into a ringing endorsement for local gatherings amongst a sea of otherwise online experiences.
