You can't fault this game for individual flavor. It blends the frenetic platforming of a Prince of Persia with the Woo-inspired action of Max Payne, then boxes it all in a grimy Grindhouse package.
The game definitely keeps things amusing with its high school humor, OTT violence, and satisfying double-gun blasting. Yet some rough edges get in the way the overall experience.
The platforming elements are clunky and lack what similar games before (Stranglehold) and after (Max Payne 3) did a whole lot better: environment interactivity and refined action controls. Also, most levels boil down to the same repetitive formula with the ‘insane mode’ segments feeling like a creative way to gloss over unfinished parts (likely due to its troubled production).
A misgiving for film snobs is, unlike the hilarious House Of The Dead: Overkill, the cinematic references are all over the place, with the developers coming across like they saw Kill Bill once and now know Grindhouse 101.
Still, it’s a game that doesn’t ask for much in time or brainpower, and overall just wants to be a fun and fast third-person action game. You can’t hate it for trying, regardless of the flaws, making it amusing enough for a weekend playthrough.
