Ranking All Games Published By Bethesda Softworks From Worst To Best

23. Rage 2 (2019)

There wasn't much demand for a Rage sequel... but we got one anyway.

Things seemed promising though during the marketing campaign: the generic wasteland was now colorful and neon, the morose tone was now vibrant and wacky, and the combat was pumped up with a wide variety of fun RPG upgrades. id Software even brought in Avalanche Studios to collaborate on the open-world element (they had solid experience creating the brilliant Mad Max game).

So, is it an improvement over the first? Yes... but only a SLIGHT improvement, and is just as guilty of the same mistakes.

The plot is just as dull, with it never able to etch its own identity and justify the franchise's existence in an overcrowded territory.

It's never as deep and rich as a Fallout, nor as addictive and hilarious as a Borderlands. Heck, it can’t even match the immersion and break-neck action of the Mad Max game - despite Avalanches’ direct involvement.

Sure, it's mechanically polished and gives enough open-world busy work if you were desperate for a wasteland to explore, but just like the first game, this has all been done much better elsewhere.
