Ranking Every Final Fantasy By Their Soundtrack

5. Final Fantasy VI

Final Fantasy VI OST: Tracks - 61, Composer(s) - Nobuo Uematsu

After his completion of the Final Fantasy VI soundtrack, Nobuo Uematsu stated that he had reached his 'primary goal, and could quit doing game music with no regrets'. Thankfully for fans of the series he continued composing, but had he retired at that point he still would've gone down in the history books given the excellence of his creations, chief amongst them his accompaniment to what is regarded as the series' highest point by many.

The game features the series' largest playable cast of characters to date (excluding spin-offs), whose themes together with the one belonging to the villainous Kefka make up just under a quarter of the whole soundtrack. The vast majority are excellent pieces - 'Locke's Theme' is as adventurous as the man it is named after, 'Celes' Theme' and 'Terra's Theme' are tailor-made for the natures of the game's two female leads and 'Kefka' conveys both the troublesome and theatrical nature of the franchise's most destructive villain.

The other three quarters of the soundtrack are a diverse mix, including a number of heartfelt and haunting pieces such as 'Forever Rachel', 'Coin Of Fate' and the 'Aria Di Mezzo Caraterre' that serves as a backdrop to the game's famous opera sequence. Battles meanwhile are well served by 'The Decisive Battle', 'Battle To The Death' and the seventeen minute whirlwind that is 'Dancing Mad'.

If anything is underserved, its locations, exceptions like 'The Veldt' aside. There's also a few 'silly' tracks like 'What?' and 'Johnny C. Bad', though they have little overall effect on what is almost a perfect accompaniment to a perfect game.
