5. Killer Instinct

Eyebrows were prompted to raise in scepticism when Microsoft announced Killer Instinct and its unorthodox content delivery model. The fear was, given its free-to-play core and intended delivery of paid seasonal DLC, that getting the reboot of Rare's brawler into a 'finished state' could take years or, due to unforeseeable circumstances, not achieve that milestone at all.

What was present in-game from day one was fantastic. Jago, Sabrewulf, Orchid and others had been christened in three-dimensional glory, combos were crazy but accessible in tandem and a deep-voiced announcer screamed his head off whenever anything remotely impressive unfolded on-screen.

Following developer Double Helix's departure, Killer Instinct's future was left in jeopardy, but fears were promptly calmed when Microsoft brought Iron Galaxy on board to keep the ball rolling with new characters, modes and the like

Today, boasting a healthy roster, tournament scene and a devoted fan base, Killer Instinct has flourished from humble beginnings to a cornerstone of the Xbox family.
