Ranking The Best Video Games Of January 2016

4. Darkest Dungeon

Metacritic Score: 86 (PC) The Verdict: Regardless of your own opinion of the "roguelike" label, Darkest Dungeon is one of the more unique recent entries into the dubious genre. Though it looks deceptively simple with its fairly unassuming art style, Dungeon boasts unexpected psychological depth as is almost completely unparalleled in a game of this type. For one, there's permadeath, and witnessing the demise of an ally has tremendous psychological effects on the remainder of your party, which can in some instances lead to further death or impairment. The game has the player juggling such a wealth of variables at any one time that it can seem overwhelming, and as such the game isn't always enjoyable, but it's hard not to admire the balls-to-the-wall insanity of it all. You'll likely feel emotionally exhausted by the time it's all over and may even resent the at-times brutal difficulty of it all, but there's absolutely nothing in the genre like it. Just settle in for the long haul and don't expect to clear it over a weekend...
