Evil Goes Global
Yes, I know that is a tagline from the movies....The globalised setting of the new game AND movie can't be a coincidence, but fighting through varied locales is always good. In today's demo, which begins in the United States, we see Leon in a dark American university. It's classic Resident Evil. The setting then shifts to Eastern Europe, then to Shanghai. Each level feels different enough to make it stand out from the crowd, and the way the enemies used different dialects was very clever indeed. The European setting, while not a real country, gives a very snowy, Russian feeling that works well. The American setting is the least standout here, but that's because it's so damn dark. The Shanghai level looks good, but is cluttered. The neon signs and tall buildings are very Chinese, though.
Classic RE Elements
While RE6 has a lot of action, and we'll get to that in a bit, but the Leon section of the demo is very old school. Tight hallways, surprise zombies, silence. While it isn't scary, it certainly is creepy, and the slower pace is great. Ammo is also a bit scarce, not as much as the older games but definitely more than Resident Evil 5. Lastly, the entire level layout is very much like the Lost in Nightmares DLC for RE5. Dark, long, narrow corridors, zero lighting and slow opening doors are very old school. However, it's not all good.
