Resident Evil 7 Reviews: 10 Early Reactions You Need To Know
6. Boss Fights Range From Awesome To Terrible
"Boss fights are particularly harrowing, and about half of them feel inspired by Metal Gear Solid, oddly enough. There are multiple ways to take these ones out, and throughout my playthroughs I found different quirks each time. The only issue I have with these fights is that those not used to the weird boss fights in Resident Evil may be unclear as to when they're doing the right thing." - Destructoid
"The boss fights tread a fine line between frustration and brilliance. Which one you get largely depends on luck...As a result it’s easy to be left wondering if you’re doing the right thing." - Gamesradar
"Resident Evil 7 only contains a handful of bosses, but they're by far the worst part of the game...These encounters break the otherwise perfect tension and pacing of the rest of the experience...These bigger enemies are invariably bullet sponges, sucking dry whole clips from your gun before finally falling... I found myself not totally certain if I was hurting the boss or how much, because the game doesn't make it clear." - Polygon
There are very few reviews that unanimously praise RE7's bosses, with most verging on the mixed side due to the sheer inconsistency of their quality. One fight involving a chainsaw has received by far the most complaints, with this and several other sections apparently leaving the player unaware of quite what they should do next.
To be fair, this has always been the RE franchise all-over: bosses have always been a mixture of incredible and atrocious, so that's nothing new.
