Shenmue 3: 10 Things It Must Do To Appeal To The Modern Gamer

4. Updated Fighting System

While nobody is denying that the fighting system in the original Shenmue games was great, it was still very much a product of its time. Relying heavily on the D-Pad - rather than the Dreamcast's analogue stick - the system could be a little clunky at times and took some getting used to.

Many modern gamers simply aren't going to spend the time required to learn the sheer number of moves that Ryo can execute - bar beat-em-up fans perhaps - so it is important that Ys.Net update the system to take advantage of everything that the PS4 has to offer.

It may be worth taking a few cues from the Yakuza series, which successfully offers a streamlined fighting system with a decent amount of depth. However, Shenmue does need to be a little bit more considered than the rampant violence offered up by Kazuma Kiryu, so Suzuki is going to have to put some thought into modernising the system so that it has the required depth in addition to being easy to get to grips with.
