SNES Classic Mini: 20 Video Games It Must Have
7. F-Zero
A launch game that perfectly demonstrated the graphics the SNES could achieve: F-Zero is still a beloved Nintendo franchise to this day. This game came at a time when backgrounds in racing games were mostly non-rotating and 2D rather than scrolled or manipulated to create illusions of depth and of 3D movement.
Simply put: many racing games made it feel like you were chasing an endless horizon that never arrived or were speeding towards a piece of colourful wallpaper that always moved away from you.
F-Zero was different: it had scale because of the way city-based tracks like Mute City or Port Town made you feel like you were racing hundreds of kilometres above them. Or the way the sci-fi setting allowed you to race across silent planets or desert wastelands.
A joy to play and difficult to beat, too. Just a shame there was no multiplayer in the original!
