14. Super Probotector: Alien Rebels/Contra III: The Alien Wars

So the PAL name for this game was quite weird but the classic run-and-gun shooter was glorious to look at and amazing to play. Part of the iconic Contra series (a.k.a. Gryzor or Probotector depending on what system you were playing on) this entry was another technical showstopper for the Super Nintendo.

From the very first stage you're taking down a range of enemies from all sides as the action is lightning fast. Players had to master shooting in all eight directions and could call on somersault attacks when the action got particularly frenetic. Later levels saw you battling a huge robotic skeleton whilst trapped in an airlock and even battling your way through a high-speed chase sequence.

Extra lives were essential for this tour-de-force.
