The tiniest of things, but hop into Sonic Mania's option screen from the main menu, and you can swap the game's visuals to show a 'CRT filter'.

Potentially unknown to many younger gamers, CRT TVs were far less clear than the ones we have today - yet their production crossed over with Sonic's release in the 90s.

CRTs would go on to have a more 'niche' appeal, even into the 2000s, despite the rise of LCD technology, yet their inclusion in Sonic Mania is entirely as a retro throwback.

Although it's great to see just how far we've come, playing Sonic in glorious HD is just a smidge easier on the eyes.
