In some mighty cool news, the Final Fantasy franchise is finally being brought to live-action life.

Sony Pictures Television today made the announcement that a live-action TV series based on Final Fantasy XIV is now in development. On the show, Sony will be working with Hivemind and Square Enix. As it so happens, Hivemind has been assisting Netflix in developing their upcoming Witcher TV series, whilst developer Square Enix is involved in the famed FF video game franchise.

At this early stage, absolutely zero plot details or casting announcements have been made public bar the fact that the small-screen offering will focus on “the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict”. As mentioned, the series will be loosely based on 2013’s ever-popular Final Fantasy XIV, although it will tell an original story that’s instead inspired by the world of Eorzea rather than directly adapting any existing narrative.

Hivemind’s Jason F. Brown, Sean Daniel and Dinesh Shamdasani will serve as executive producers on the Final Fantasy TV series, with Ben Lusting and Jake Thornton on writing duties in addition to also acting as executive producers.

To date, Final Fantasy XIV has a massive 16 million registered users who’ve dabbled with the game so far. With a new expansion pack – Shadowbringers – released next week, the popularity of this all-encompassing MMORPG doesn’t look like waning any time soon.
